BHA Wakefield
Healthcare, Sexual Health
BHA Wakefield in partnership with Spectrum Community Health CIC, supports all people living with HIV in Wakefield. We work with vulnerable communities to prevent HIV and promote good sexual health.
We offer a free HIV testing service, free condom postal service, HIV peer support, groups, specialist person centred counselling and advocacy. In addition to our community engagement, capacity and skills building within community groups, BHA delivers bespoke training for professionals and organisations on a number of health and social care issues including health inequalities, sexual health and HIV

Families & Babies

We are excited that Families and Babies (FAB) has been commissioned by Wakefield Council to deliver the Breastfeeding Promotion and Community Peer Support Service, supporting new families to enjoy their breastfeeding journeys and helping to normalise breastfeeding across the district.
FAB is also commissioned by Mid Yorks NHS Trust to support breastfeeding on the postnatal wards at Pinderfields Hospital helping to get breastfeeding off to a great start.

Mermaids supports transgender, non-binary and gender-diverse children and young people, as well as their families and professionals involved in their care.
Transgender, non-binary and gender-diverse children and teens need support and understanding, as well as the freedom to explore their gender identity. Whatever the outcome, Mermaids is committed to helping families navigate the challenges they may face.

Our House
LGBT+ Charities & Organisations
Our House Wakefield is a safe, sober, and supportive space created by and for LGBTQ+ people in the heart of Wakefield. Whether you need a friendly chat, a listening ear, or just a place to feel at ease, we’re here for you.
Their LGBTQ+ café and shop is open Tuesday to Saturday, 10 am–4 pm, offering a judgement-free zone to connect, enjoy great food and drink, and find community. We also host inclusive events every month, including peer support groups, queer socials, and skills workshops to bring people together and provide resources for those in need.

Turning Minds Around

Turning Minds Around is a Community Interest Company (CIC) based in the heart of the Eastmoor Estate in Wakefield, dedicated to providing affordable counselling and mental well-being services. Their mission is to offer therapy to those in need, addressing a wide range of mental health challenges.
Services Offered:
Individual Counselling: Personalized therapy sessions addressing issues such as anxiety, depression, PTSD, anger management, substance abuse, grief and loss, eating disorders, trauma (childhood/adult/domestic violence), obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), autism, and ADHD.
"Breaking the Cycle" Programme: An exclusive 12-week addiction management programme combining person-centred therapy, motivational therapy, and cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT). This programme focuses on rebuilding self-esteem, motivation, and positive thinking to overcome addiction
Computerised Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (cCBT): A clinician-supported programme teaching the principles of CBT through a tailored approach. Delivered via a terminal at their centre, cCBT helps clients understand the association between thoughts, feelings, and behaviours, offering strategies to challenge distorted thinking patterns. Upon completion, clients can continue using the programme through an Android mobile application.
Therapy Charges:
Face-to-Face Counselling: £40 per session
Telephone Counselling: £30 per sessionComputerised CBT (cCBT): £25 per session
Discounted rates are available for clients in receipt of means-tested benefits (proof required).

West Yorkshire Police - Hate Crime

Hate crimes / hate incidents can take place anywhere – at home, in the streets, at work, online or at school.
No-one should have to live with the fear, anxiety and consequences of hate.
Reporting it when it happens will help the Police to deal with it and may prevent these incidents from happening to someone else. You will also help the police understand the extent of hate crime in your local area so they can better respond to it.

Citizens Advice Wakefield District

Citizens Advice Wakefield District is an independent charity offering free, confidential, and impartial advice to residents of the Wakefield Metropolitan District. Their services include:
Benefits Advice: Assistance with applications and appeals for benefits such as DLA, PIP, ESA, JSA, IS, HB, and CTS.c
Employment Guidance: Information on employment rights, redundancy, and workplace disputes.
Housing Support: Advice on issues related to renting, homelessness, and housing disputes.
Family Law: Guidance on matters like divorce, child custody, and relationship breakdowns.
Legal Assistance: Information on legal rights, court procedures, and accessing legal aid.
Immigration Advice: Support with immigration applications and understanding immigration laws.
Health-Related Issues: Advice on accessing healthcare services and dealing with health-related concerns.
In addition to the Adviceline, they offer:
Consumer Advice: Assistance with consumer rights and disputes via the Consumer Line at 0808 223 1133.
Universal Credit Support: Help with claiming Universal Credit through their dedicated helpline at 0800 144 8444

Gasped

Gasped is a long-established charitable organization located in Wakefield, dedicated to providing counselling and support services to individuals navigating challenging and traumatic periods in their lives. They offer a confidential and supportive environment to help clients address various emotional and psychological issues
Counselling Services: Gasped provides professional counselling to assist individuals dealing with grief, abuse, addiction, anger management, anxiety, depression, and other emotional challenges.
Support Groups: They facilitate support groups that offer a platform for individuals to share experiences and receive mutual support.

Live Well Wakefield

Live Well Wakefield is a social prescribing service that helps individuals improve their health and well-being by connecting them with non-medical support in their local community. Recognising that well-being is influenced by more than just medical factors, Live Well Wakefield provides personalised support for adults (18+) who may be experiencing loneliness, stress, or other challenges affecting their daily lives.
Their team of advisors and link workers offer tailored guidance, signposting individuals to services such as social groups, exercise programmes, volunteering opportunities, and mental health support. By addressing the wider social determinants of health, Live Well Wakefield empowers people to take control of their well-being, fostering a healthier and more connected Wakefield community.

Mind Leeds

Leeds Mind is a mental health charity dedicated to supporting individuals in the Leeds area who are experiencing mental health difficulties. Established in 1972, it is affiliated with the national Mind organization and operates independently to provide a range of services aimed at promoting positive mental health and well-being.

Employment Support: Leeds Mind offers training and guidance to help individuals enter and maintain employment, education, or voluntary work.
Housing Support: They provide personalized assistance with accommodation and independent living, ensuring clients have stable and supportive living conditions.
Well-being Services: The organization promotes social inclusion and community involvement through one-on-one support, group activities, and self-help initiatives.
Creative Well-being Activities: Leeds Mind's community arts centre, Inkwell, offers a safe and accessible space for creative expression, boosting confidence and well-being through artistic activities.

We understand that every situation is unique, so there's no judgement, only a safe space to talk; in an environment where you feel most comfortable.
Inspiring Families is a specialist support service for family and carers who are directly affected by a person’s substance use. This can be individual support or part of our 5 Step group programme.

West Yorkshire Police - Domestic Abuse

We have specially trained officers in our district Safeguarding Units who can provide support and practical assistance to those who suffer domestic abuse, for example in making your home safer. We work in partnership with a wide variety of statutory and voluntary agencies who can also provide help and support and with your permission we will put them in touch with you.
