Last month, our Chair of Trustees, David Swyer, had the pleasure of meeting Louie, the founder and director of Our House Wakefield, to discuss how our organisations can work closely together. This exciting meeting laid the foundation for a collaborative partnership that will enhance the support we provide to the LGBTQ+ community in Wakefield. Our focus is on ensuring we align our efforts to complement one another, working together when needed without competing, to maximise the impact of our initiatives.

Both LonGBoaT Wakefield and Our House Wakefield share a passion for creating inclusive, safe spaces that empower LGBTQ+ individuals. During their meeting, David and Louie discussed opportunities to develop collaborative projects that build on each organisation’s strengths. This partnership seeks to:

  • Enhance the range of resources and services available to the LGBTQ+ community in Wakefield.

  • Coordinate efforts to ensure both organisations work effectively and avoid duplicating services.

  • Support shared goals, including increasing awareness of mental health challenges within the community and fostering creative expression through inclusive programming.

What’s Next?

As we look to the future, LonGBoaT and Our House are committed to working together on meaningful initiatives that address the needs of our community. From joint events to shared outreach programmes, this collaboration promises to be a significant step forward for LGBTQ+ support in Wakefield.

We’re thrilled to begin this partnership and can’t wait to share updates on our joint efforts. Stay tuned for more information about upcoming projects and events as we work alongside Our House to make Wakefield an even more inclusive and supportive place.

About Our House Wakefield

Founded by Louie in 2019, Our House Wakefield is the flagship project of Learnest CIC, an organisation dedicated to celebrating trans and neurodiverse people in the workplace. Emerging from community feedback collected in 2020, the project aims to provide Wakefield with a dedicated, sober space for the LGBTQ+ community.

Since opening its first home in 2021, Our House has welcomed over 3,000 visitors and offered a range of creative programmes. In May 2024, after overcoming challenges, they reopened in a bigger and brighter venue. Today, they are proud to serve as a vibrant, inclusive hub for the LGBTQ+ community in Wakefield and West Yorkshire. To learn more about their inspiring work, visit Our House Wakefield’s website.
