LonGBoaT Wakefield and Barnardo's Collaboration Creates Safe Shopping Space

Writer: LonGBoaT WakefieldLonGBoaT Wakefield

LonGBoaT Wakefield, in partnership with Barnardo’s, is excited to announce a new initiative aimed at creating a safe and inclusive shopping experience for the LGBT+ community.

Date and Time: 15th April 2025, from 5pm onwards

Location: Barnardo's West Shopping Centre, Armley, LS12 3AS

We are organising an out-of-hours shopping trip specifically designed for members of the queer and trans communities to shop without fear of discrimination or discomfort.

For many individuals within the LGBT+ community, particularly those who are transgender, shopping for gendered clothing can be an incredibly daunting experience. The pressure to conform to societal expectations and gender norms, coupled with the discomfort of feeling misgendered or judged by others, often leaves many feeling unwelcome or even unsafe in traditional retail environments.

For transgender people, the struggle is even more pronounced, with many facing anxiety about being “out of place” in gendered clothing sections or being unable to find the right fit or style that reflects their true gender identity.

This is why the upcoming out-of-hours shopping trip on 15th April 2025 will offer a unique and empowering opportunity for those who may feel excluded or uncomfortable in mainstream shopping settings. By shopping in a quieter, more relaxed environment, attendees will have the chance to try on clothes, explore new styles, and shop at their own pace without the fear of negative judgement. The aim is to create a space where everyone can feel confident and supported in expressing their gender identity through clothing.

Future Initiatives: If this initiative proves successful, we hope to continue hosting similar shopping trips, working with different retailers to ensure that everyone in the LGBT+ community, particularly trans individuals, can access a safe and comfortable shopping experience. Our goal is to make shopping for gendered clothes less stressful, more inclusive, and, most importantly, more fun.

We are looking forward to seeing how this project unfolds and to continuing our work with Barnardo’s to improve the lives of LGBT+ individuals in Wakefield. Together, we can break down barriers and build a more inclusive and supportive environment for everyone.

Get Involved: If you wish to get involved in this activity, come along to one of our Queer Social events or get in touch or sign up using the form here.
